Hello and welcome back to my blog. Today the Funkie side of the Frilly and Funkie Design Team shares their inspiration for the current challenge Artist Trading Coins. Here's what our very creative Suzz has to say about her theme:

The challenge this time is to create an Artist Trading Coin. I was inspired by a new way of capturing a little bit of art to share with others. You challenge is to create a trading coin which should be a circle shape 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

As always, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, and the winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie. The next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Welcome to my book of  'attitude'! First, I will show you how I created my AT Coins and then share links on how to create the booklet and more photos of how it all turned out. Remember you can click on any photo to zoom in.

I decided to make a masterboard and cut my coins from that. The masterboard  actually started as a sheet of mixed media paper that was a mop up of a recent play I had with my new Distress Oxide Sprays. Pretty ugly and a little muddy, but you'll see it works in the end. You'll see the actual project I was working on this coming Saturday in Frilly and Funkie's Saturday Showcase feature.

I used Tim Holtz Grid Dot mini stencil, Picket Fence Distress paint and a make up applicator to sponge a design. I also flipped the stencil over to get the monoprint. I love the subtle design it leaves. Lastly, I splattered with Black Soot paint.

Now that I had my paper ready to go, I used the packaging from my punch to help me find desirable areas to cut for the requisite 2 1/2 inch circles. It also helps me visualize my end design. I used the tiniest characters from Tim Holtz Christmas and Halloween Paper Dolls, Snippets and Snarky Small Talk stickers for each of my collages. I cut 6 circles each from the masterboard,  cream colored card stock and  waste packaging and adhered them with Distress Collage Medium Matte.

The packaging gives the coins some heft and stability and the cream card stock serves as a backing. I later decided to give the backs a pattern, and I again used the stencil to print and monoprint, this time with Pumice Stone and Ground Espresso inks.  Because I may want to trade these coins in the future, this simple design gives me the option of writing a message or coin details here. All my bits were adhered with collage medium.  Each coin edge, front and back was blended with Ground Espresso ink, and I went around the skinny edge with Ground Espresso paint.

Here are my six coins completed, and you will get to meet each character up close in the photos following. Gotta love those sarcastic Small Talk stickers! I'm so excited Tim's now got them in the Big Talk version.

That's it for the coins, but you'll see more of my friends on and in my booklet. My booklet is a compilation of these two  tutorials: Teresa Morgan Artist Trading Coin Mini Book, Playful Bookbinding and Paper Works -- Paula Beardell Krieg shares an easy to follow V-Pockets Book Cover step by step. I made these as signatures for my booklet.

I tried the making the cool pockets with the aperture and even a concertina fold thingy to fit just 6 coin envelopes, like Teresa shows in her video, but didn't like my coins falling down and sliding around out of the window. I know I could have worked around this, but I had already tried making the v-fold pocket, as an option, and preferred the way my coins were kept safe and snug. I used some old carpet thread and a pamphlet stitch to hold my three signatures in. Many videos can be found on You Tube to guide you on this.

Here's the little album cover, spine and back. The panels were all cut from the same masterboard.

I added some stamping using the script stamp from Entomology and some old Ideaology Remnant Rubs on the spine and front cover.

The seam binding ribbon looks beautiful colored with Spiced Marmalade and Fossilized Amber Oxide sprays. The following photos show the inside covers --  front and back as well as the front and back of each signature. The booklet cover is cut from an old Tim Holtz paper stash (Lost and Found) and the signature covers are from his Wallflower collection. I used some very old drawing paper I got at an estate sale for the signature bases/pockets. The pad has a 98 cent price tag on it! I find this is just the right weight of paper for these pockets, allowing for nice, crisp folds without the bulkiness of card stock. Regular cheapo scrapbook paper would work, too.

And now here are my coins all safe and snug in their little pockets.
