'Sea' the World Etcetera Tag

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera Tag 1

Hello friends! Today marks the start of a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog, formerly Frilly and Funkie. The name and blog design has changed but the bi-weekly challenges continue as usual.  Starting with the current theme, both the Frilly and the Funkie sides of the Design Team are joining forces to present one post for the challenge titled Water, Water, Everywhere. This theme was chosen by the talented Cec, and here is what she says:

Often when people go on vacation there is water involved – fishing, cruising, checking out the aquarium, enjoying water sports or playing in the sand at the beach. For this challenge I want you to create a vintage or shabby chic project that reminds you of one or more of these past times.

As always, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, and the winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog. The next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 2

The inspiration for my panel came from these three seafaring ladies that were on top of the deck of Tim Holtz Found Relatives pack that was still sitting out on my desk. (Nancy, Betty and Barbara, all BFF's since high school.) "Use me!", they cried out in unison. I colored them with Distress Crayons and layered over Classic and Metallic Kraft Stock panels. I added a tiny price 'sticker' from Tim's Keepsakes Ephemera pack, distressed and inked with Ground Espresso.

Backing the photo is a Destination Thinlit die cut heat embossed with Fractured Ice embossing powder over brown Distress ink. This translucent powder does amazing things over colored inks and makes it so easy to add depth and dimension. I adhered the die cut over an oxide mop up panel from my stash and fussy cut around the edges.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 4

I had another inky panel in my stash that worked perfectly as the background. It was a mop up from a combination of  (I believe) Pumice Stone, Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Sprays on Bristol board . I adhered the panel to a Mini Etcetera Tag with Distress Collage Medium Matte, trimmed and sanded the edges. I blended with Evergreen Bough Distress ink and added Metallic crayon randomly to the edges.

I just picked up a couple of vintage checkbooks at a really inexpensive estate sale this past weekend (these were free), and on flipping through the stubs, I came across this one that worked perfectly with my theme. This check was for $65 and it was for "Trip-Cost/Laundry". I used one of the  Ticket Booth Framelits to cut the rough edge where I tore it from the checkbook and aged it a bit more with Distress inks.

I embossed a strip of Classic Kraft Stock with Foundry 3D Texture Fade, sanded and inked with Rusty Hinge oxide and Ground Espresso ink.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 6

I originally had plans to use my new to me Tim Holtz Sea Life  stamp set as the focus of my project, but Nancy, Barbara and Betty were calling to me. Yet I couldn't resist adding this sweet seahorse and seaweed from the set. I can just imagine looking out the port hole in your cruise cabin and seeing this bit of sea life. I used Classic and Metallic Kraft Stock and Steampunk Parts die to make the aged brass porthole.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 7

Another piece of Keepsakes ephemera and a stamped and torn ticket back the Quote Chip. I used Tim Holtz Ticket Booth stamps and Framelits to make the ticket, which is colored with oxides and stamped with a combination of Distress Archival inks ( Faded Jeans and Ground Espresso) which adds depth and age. Using my Stamp Platform makes easy work of stamping using more than one color.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 8

An Ideaology Swivel Clasp holds an altered Typed Token . I used a seahorse charm from my stash, but Linda sells a beautiful seahorse charm in the shop as well as a seaside charm set that comes with the sweetest  detailed seahorse along with 8 other antiqued bronze nautical charms. (They're on sale for just $3.59 for the set!)  I tied off my tag with a couple pieces of that gorgeous ribbon Linda ties up her thank you packages with along with Ideaology Jute String colored with Cracked Pistachio Distress Oxide spray.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/07/sea-world-etcetera-tag.html 'Sea' the World' Mixed Media Etcetera 9

That's all for me today, but there's plenty more wonderful watery inspiration over on the blog, where my Frilly and Funkie teammates will wow you with their creativity. Then it's over to you! I can't wait to see what you will make! Hugs and Blessings! Sara Emily

Memories of Home for Frilly and Funkie

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 1

Hello friends! Today the Funkie side of the Frilly and Funkie design team will inspire you with their projects for the current challenge, Home, Sweet Home. I am hosting this challenge and here's the scoop:

Whether your house is grand or modest, neat or messy, there's no place like home. Houses get bought and sold, but home stays with you forever. For this challenge, I would like to see how you interpret what home means to you on your vintage or shabby chic project.

As always, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, and the winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie. The next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

Home for me, means quite a few things, but at the base of it all, is family. These are the people I can feel totally comfortable with, and know will love me no matte what. I've lived in quite a few houses in my lifetime--13 houses and apartments in 3 states to be exact. Only a handful of them actually felt like home, so I decided to make a Tim Holtz Tiny House for each of the 4 that outline the stages of my 'home life'.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 2

The first abode depicts the farmhouse I grew up in with my 5 brothers and sisters. While I made  farmhouse siding and a rusted tin roof for this first Tiny House, I really don't remember much about the outside of our house. It's our family inside that matters, and back before cable TV, cell phones and laptops, we spent our time playing and working along side each other day in and day out.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 3

I used an Ideaology Snippets Ephemera 7 cent stamp, because it says US 7. That's what we were: 6 kids and a Dad. I couldn't find an appropriate Paper Doll to represent my Dad (and I don't have a single picture of him) so our dog, Sparky, who was my Dad's sidekick, is standing in for him. Each of the Paper Doll kids was colored with Distress crayons.

The shiplap siding is watercolor paper embossed with Lumber 3D Texture Fade, smeared with Wendy Vecchi's crackle paste and cut into strips. I highlighted the edges and cracks with Walnut Stain and Hickory Smoke Distress Crayons and glued the strips over a base I cut from an old Tim Holtz Paper Stash cover.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 4

The 'tin roof' is made with layers of Black Soot Distress Paint, heat embossing with Seth Apter's Eclipse Baked Velvet and Chunky Rust, followed by Weathered Wood paint.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 5

'Family' and 'Home' are Big Talk stickers also embossed with the Lumber folder and treated the same as the siding. The Ideaology Milk Cap had Crazing applied to it and smeared with crayon.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 7

'Collector of memories' is a Remnant Rub, and the leaves represent one of my favorite memories of home...the entire family raking big piles of leaves from the three sugar maples out front and then us kids spending the day jumping in them. At the end of the day, my Dad  made them into one huge bonfire. The leaves are Skeleton Leaves Thinlits and the older Fall Foliage Thinlits cut from various colored scraps from my scrap bin.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 8

There were times in my life that my family was geographically far from me, so this next house depicts me living the single life. This is when home meant a place of comfort and safety and a place for me to learn to grow as an individual.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 9

My second home I bought when I was single  had wood siding, so I constructed this one from Distress Woodgrain Cardstock. I colored this with Antique Linen paint, Bundled Sage and Tumbled Glass Distress stain and Walnut Stain crayon. The roof is cut from a fiber paper from my stash, inked with more Walnut Stain and patted with Weathered Wood paint.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 10

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 11

It's at this stage in my life that I fell in love with gardening, so I tucked some Ideaology Botanical Layers behind my Paper Doll. I also tucked in a ticket from the Keepsakes Ephemera Pack and Adorned Thinlits die cuts heat embossed with White Cloud Baked Velvet.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 12

My third house depicts a time when I met my future husband, married and started our life together in our first combined home. I cut this house from Worn Wallpaper,  because I remember there was lot's of old wall paper that needed to be removed from our fixer upper. My husband and I worked as a team and made that house our home, working nights and weekends on remodeling it. Home meant love and partnership (and a lot of work!).

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 13

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 14

I sanded the Worn Wallpaper and added back some color with Distress Oxide Spray and blended with Distress ink. The roof is cut from corrugated card from my stash and scribbled with Distress crayon.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 15

The Baseboard Doll couple couldn't be more perfect!  I colored the couple with Distress crayons. The hearts are actually parts of a flower from the Funky Floral #2 Thinlits. I added color with Wendy Vecchi Blendable ink--Poppy and heat embossed with clear powder. The clock is from the Keepsakes pack and the Remnant Rub #2 is on a Snippet. 'You and me' is a Clippings Sticker.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 16

I finalize my journey at the home we currently live in. It's far from perfect, and I've never really fallen in love with it. This house requires constant repairs, being older. Our home is special though, because it's where my husband and I raised our kids, and it's in a wonderful neighborhood that we feel so at home in. Home is, once again, where my family is.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 17

This Tiny House is  inspired by Anna Karin's beautiful Tiny House and is cut from another old Tim Holtz Paper Stash cover. I used a stone die cut from the Mixed Media #4 Thinlits set and loosely followed Anna Karin's tutorial, substituting Pumice Stone Distress Oxide Spray for her paint. Although my crackle did not turn out at all like I would have pictured, I'm pleased with the stone work nevertheless.  It's the perfect setting for the Paper Doll family from the Christmas pack. Another couple of ephemera from the Keepsakes pack, Funky Floral #3 die cut greenery and a Clippings sticker tell the story.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 19

I left the back unadorned, because I am loving how the stones look here.  I used crackle paste through a Tim Holtz mini stencil from set #28.  I colored with Distress Oxide Sprays. crayons and sealed with Crazing. I highlighted the cracks by smearing with crayon.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/06/memories-of-home-for-frilly-and-funkie.html Memories of Home Tim Holtz Tiny Houses 20

I used one of Tim Holtz Fragments stamps and Hickory Smoke Archival ink and text from the Dapper stamp set with Black Soot Archival. I stamped the phrase on a scrap of plain collage paper before sticking down with Collage Medium Matte.

That's all for me! I hope you will visit the Frilly and Funkie challenge blog to see the amazing projects my talented Frilly and Funkie teammates have created. And then, it's over to you! We would love to see what you will create for this challenge! Hugs and blessings! Mini Album Tour Featuring Stamperia Lilac Flowers for Frilly and Funkie Mother May I

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 1

Hello and welcome! Over at  Frilly and Funkie challenge blog we are celebrating Moms!  Super talented Suzz is our hostess this time, and this is what she says about her challenge theme, Mother May I?.

May in the U.S. is when we celebrate Mother's Day and honor our mothers. I am challenging you to create something that is vintage or shabby chic which is inspired by your Mother or any mother figure in your life. It can be a favorite memory, something based on her style, something she said/says to you, or anything that reminds you of your mother figure. Make sure to share with us how your mother inspired your art!

My project was inspired by my Mom's love of gardening and the lilac tree and peony bush that perfumed the air outside my bedroom window growing up. Living up north, we didn't have air conditioning, so we opened the windows to cool the house. I grew up on a dairy farm, and the air was never what you would call 'perfumed' any other time of the year except when the lilacs and peonies were in bloom.  I remember my Mom dressing us up and taking our photo under that lilac tree--it was her pride and joy and centerpiece of the flower garden she carefully tended. So when I saw the beautiful graphics on Stamperia's Lilac Flowers paper pack, I knew that I needed to make something with them to honor my Mom. Even though Mother's Day is passed now, my Mom has a birthday coming up and this will make a great gift.

I wanted to use every single one of the pages in the pack, so a mini album with lots of tags and flaps came to mind, inspired by my lovely teammate, Kathy Clement. My goodness, that girl makes some magic with any paper she gets her hands on! I can picture this album as a place my Mom can make notes on her garden and even include some photos of her favorite blossoms.

I have lots of photos for you as we flip through this approximately 6 x 6 mini album--40 to be exact.  You might notice some color variations in the pictures. I started taking the photos outside in direct sunlight, but because it got so hot (100 degrees in the shade) my phone stopped working, and I had to move the party indoors. Grab yourself a comfy seat, a favorite beverage and snack, and sit back and relax while we get started on the tour! We'll look at the front cover, spine and back cover and then move to the inside.

If you're interested in learning how to make a mini album like this for yourself, I'll have a step by step tutorial this coming Saturday on the Frilly and Funkie Challenge blog.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 4

Along with the beautiful Stamperia papers, I used a Tim Holtz Lace Baseboard Frame and his Crochet die, some vintage lace from my collection, as well as paper flowers from my stash to decorate the front and back covers. A seam binding bow holds the book closed.  For the spine, I used a piece of coordinating rice paper from Stamperia that I won in their blog hop. I love Stamperia's rice papers, and Linda sells a selection of them in her shop

Another of the pretty papers from the collection lines the inside covers. The first page has a belly band that holds a simple folio in place. There's more of the Crochet die cuts here as well as some faux rouched ribbon and altered flowers. You'll see I used the Crochet die cuts throughout the album.

Ephemera from within the pack along with a scrap from my stash creates the folio, and more cut outs from the paper pack as well as the paper pack's cover art make tags to jot down notes.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 9

The next two pages hold lots of surprises; two pockets on the left and a figure eight string closure on the right opens to reveal another pocket within the flaps.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 10

The 5 x 5 square pull out panel is colored with Distress Oxide Sprays and stamped with script from the Tim Holtz Entomology set. This would be a great place to add a photo. I can easily add more of these panels, as the pocket is quite roomy.  More cover art is made into another tag matted with another scrap from my stash. The reverse side is white to accept more note taking.

The flaps on the right open to reveal a pocket with a tiny fan album tucked inside. The front and back covers of the fan album are made with a tag and paper cutout from the pack, and the papers within were colored with the Oxide sprays.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 13

We flip to the next two page spread where there's a simple flip up feature on the left and another belly band holding a pretty envelop on the right.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 16

The envelope comes in the pack, already decorated; all you have to do is fold it up and tuck in some of the ephemera from the pack. While the front of the flip up feature on the left is from the Lilac Flowers paper pack, the journal page underneath comes from my stash. I just cut out and adhered the pansy from the paper collection to tie it in.

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 17

This two page spread has some of my favorite images from the pack of 10 double faced sheets. Lots of lovely lilac blossoms along with little sprays of peonies. (They might be roses, but I like to think they are peonies.)

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/2019/05/mini-album-tour-featuring-stamperia.html Stamperia Lilac Flowers Tim Holtz Entomology Lace Baseboard Frames Mini Album Tour 19

Again, on the left there's two pockets; one filled with a hand colored and stamped panel and the shorter one with some more of the cover art and scraps.

On the right there's a two flap envelope of sorts with a swivel closure made with an Ideaology Story Stick. A strip of 'lace' from the pack is fussy cut and adhered front and back of this flap. There's so much detail, it's hard not to believe it's real lace. Inside, there's lots to look at, including a top fold panel I made from the Lilac Flowers collection with a hidden booklet and two tags in a butterfly tuck spot. The butterfly and the butterfly tag are cut from the collection, and the dragonfly ephemera was in one of my thank you gifts that Linda tucks into your orders. Love this little card, and had to use it before it got lost in the shuffle; I think it plays well with this collection.

When you flip up the top fold element, there's a waterfall feature made with glassine envelopes I had in my stash. Tucked inside are little cards cut from the papers. I added some lilac bunches from the leftover rice paper. I cut slits into the envelope and folded back the edges, to make removing the cards easier.

Here are the pretty cards removed from their sleeves and a peek inside the notebook. Again, these are papers I colored with Oxide Sprays.

We turn the page to this two page spread. There's nothing going on on the left in the way of pockets or flaps. This design is so gorgeous I thought it would be a pity to cover it up, so I just added a Crochet die cut. On the right this stunning French advert image takes center stage with another Crochet die cut and  some of that dainty lace from the collection running along the side.

When you lift the flap, there's another note card with a cover art tiny tag to pull out.

On the left side of this  last two page spread there's another two flap envelope with a drop down swivel closure made with an Ideaology Trinket Pin. I bet you'll never guess why that butterfly is hiding under it. You'll have to wait 'til Saturday to find out!

Inside there are four tags from the paper pack tucked into mini glassine bags. I cut the top off and slipped in the tags. I saved mine from various goodies I purchased at The Funkie Junkie Boutique, and some were from Linda's thank you gifts. But if you're not a hoarder like me, you can purchase a pack of them from the shop.

There's a little hidden tuck spot at the bottom for notes, a small photo or even some extra bags to hold some seeds or dried petals from the garden.

Here we are at the last page and inside of the back cover. The belly band is decorated with another Crochet die cut and flowers, and tucked under it is a 5 x 5 panel cut from the papers.
