Found (and Lost) Relative Vintage Card for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Challenge Blog

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com Vintage Mixed Media Card Tim Holtz Sizzix Crochet Burst 3D Impresslits 1

Hello, and welcome! It's time for our newest challenge at The Funkie Junkie Challenge Blog, and this time our hostess is the talented Suzz!  She titles her challenge 'Bits and Bobs', and here's what she says:

"Do you have a pile of leftover scraps from projects previously made or even a half finished project waiting for you to get the time to complete it?   This is the challenge for you!  It is time to pull out those scraps, remnants or half finished projects and pull them together into a fabulous shabby chic or vintage project.  Make sure to mention in your post what part of your project was a scrap or remnant."

As always, the winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team. Please see the blog for details.

Let's get started! Pictured below are a few scraps I salvaged from my bits box and backgrounds file that I thought might work together. In the photo directly below, I've already started to alter the not so perfect background with Forest Moss Distress ink to unify my color scheme. I've put together a little pictorial step by step to show how those little bits got altered. The little piece of Crochet die cut, Ticket Booth ticket and vintage checkbook stub were leftover from previous projects and the burst medallion was an 'oops'; I put the Metallic paper in the Impresslit folder upside down so I was left with a debossed medallion. (But I saved it anyway :):) )

I altered an original Baseboard Frame (I shared a link to the new Halloween Baseboard Frames below, which are similar) following my tutorial. I used Peeled Paint Distress Crayon to highlight the cracks and sprayed with Walnut Stain Distress Oxide Spray. Inside the frame, I've used a Found Relative and followed Stacy's tutorial  to age the photo.  I've used this technique on my witch's cauldron, but I'da never thunk to do it on photos. Stacy, you're a genius--thank you for the inspiration!!! If you have not been to Stacy's blog--Tattered Nest Designs, you will be in for a treat; she can make anything look like it's been discovered in her grandma's attic. While she used Mushroom Alcohol Ink and Smolder Alcohol Pearls to color her witch, I added drips of Slate alcohol ink as well.

I layered over a sanded and inked panel of gold Metallic Kraft Stock and then a sanded panel of old Distress sandable cardstock. I applied a Halloween Remnant Rub to an off cut from another Found Relative.  (I really do save all my bits!) I smeared it with Crazing, dripped with Mushroom and Smolder inks/pearls and brought out the cracks with crayon. The vintage buttons are from my stash, and I tied a bow on one with a short length of thread I had leftover from another project. You never know when you can put these little pieces to use! Save them in a little box, and pull it out when you need a little something.

Here are some close-up photos to show the detail.

Where to Go? Masculine Mixed Media Card

Sara Emily Barker http://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Where to Go Mixed Media Card #timholtz #stampersanonymous #sizzixalterations #rangerdistress #ideaololgy 1

Welcome friends! Thank you for all your sweet comments on my recent posts. I've just returned from almost two weeks of 'clean' vacation time in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia, with NO internet and am trying to get my bloglegs back.  What better way than to create a travel themed card for Kathy's  'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' theme at Frilly and Funkie?

Here's what Kathy has to say about her theme: 'Summer is a great time to travel.  For this challenge, create a vintage or shabby chic travel themed project.  Think folded maps, cruise ships, road signs, compasses, passports, trains, planes or automobiles. As long as your project features a travel theme, you're headed in the right direction.'

You might recognize that frame from my tutorial on creating with Tim Holtz Baseboard Frames. I didn't have much in the line of planes trains or automobiles, but I did managed to come up with a travel themed card for Kathy's challenge. Most of my layers were either from the old Expedition ephemera pack or Tim's Pocket Cards. The plane is a Remnant Rub, as is 'The Journey'.

I stamped part of a ticket from Ticket Booth on an inky scrap, and used the Framelits to die cut it out. I cut it into two pieces for some interest in my collage.

The key is from one of those lovely sets that Linda carries in the The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  I altered it with alcohol inks -- Snow Cap and Mushroom, and while tacky, sprinkled with Patina Oxide Baked Texture and heated 'til just melted. A Story Stick tells the story of travels. I just scribbled it with Picket Fence Distress Crayon. Of course, I had to use one of my beloved Paper Dolls! Sanded and colored with more crayons.

Everything is layered over Correspondence paper stash, which is layered over Classic Kraft Stock, sanded and blended with Ground Espresso Distress ink. I did a little faux stitching using a stamp from my stash. My sewing machine was threaded and ready to sew, but it had brown thread in it. It takes me about 10 minutes to thread the needle, and that was 10 minutes I couldn't spare right now.

You Already Know Too Much Wall Hanging

Sara Emily Barker http://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ You Already Know Too Much Wall Hanging #timholtz #ideaology #baseboardframes #stampersanonymous 1

Hello, friends! I've had some more fun playing around with Tim Holtz Baseboard Frames and Worn Wallpaper. This time, I've created a wall hanging for my BFF, because she really already does know too much. Ha! Ha! For even more ideas on how to create with these wonderful frames, please see my tutorial at Frilly and Funkie.

How do you like my new hankie? I picked it up at a yard sale in a bag FULL of doilies for just 50 cents this weekend, and I haven't had time to iron it. It's REAL silk! Squeal!

I sprayed my Worn Wallpaper with Distress Resist Spray in my box reserved just for this, so it doesn't get all over everything. Once it's on, it's on for good! When dry, I blended with  Frayed Burlap Distress ink and adhered it to a Vignette Frame backing panel using Distress Collage Medium Matte. I used the actual frame on this wall hanging, so I had this panel left in my stash.  The edges were wrapped to give it a finished look and then blended with Ground Espresso ink. I love the additional vintage appearance the spray gives the wallpaper, and the texture feels wonderful, too.

The shabby crackle on the Baseboard frame resulted from some experiments I was doing with Distress Collage Medium Crazing, crayons, and collage medium. First, I applied crazing in random thicknesses on the frame. After I came back to it a few days later, I scribbled it with Picket Fence Distress Crayon and rubbed it around with my dampened finger. This worked on my previous experiment, but this time some of the crazing started to flake off. I think I put it on too thickly. The white was too white, so I toned it down and sealed the crazing with Vintage collage medium. I like how it turned out!

To back the frame, I used my favorite mini stencil -- Floral and texture paste and colored with Antique Linen, Tattered Rose, and Bundled Sage Distress Oxides. My chosen Paper Doll girlfriends, a ribbon from Adornments Ribbons and Bows smudged with Picket Fence crayon, some Elements Remnant Rubs and a Snarky Small Talk sticker finish it off.
