Find Joy Etcetera Tag With Tim Holtz Wildflower Stems #1 and #2

Hello, friends! Over at  Frilly and Funkie we've started our second week of the current challenge, hosted by talented Kathy Clement. She calls her theme 'Winter Blues', and here's how she describes it:

January is the longest winter month and lots of us get the "winter blues." Let's take the winter blues in a positive direction by creating a mostly monochromatic vintage or shabby chic project done up in shades of blue. You may use a bit of white, beige or grey for contrast, but I would like to see the blues to be front and center in this project.

As always, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, and the winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie. The next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

This was a particularly fun challenge for me because I love blue! A play with Tim Holtz new Wildflower Stems #1 and #2 Thinlits die sets were the inspiration behind this blues-y tag. These over-sized incredibly detailed wildflower die cuts lend themselves perfectly to home decor pieces, but would feel equally at home on a card.

You'll see from my close up photos below that I started with a Small Etcetera Tag (which is a whopping 5 1/2 x 10 inches!) and gave it a couple of coats of gesso.  I used Distress Collage Medium Vintage to adhere favorite portions of Stamperia Blue Land Lamp Rice Paper. I love the images on this paper and all the mixed media work is already done for you! There was plenty of the beautiful design left on the single sheet to use on the Collage Frame along with Ideaology Botanical Collage Paper, this time adhered with the matte version of collage medium to offer some contrast to the tag. There's some script stamping in Watering Can Archival ink; the diminutive script from the Entomology set adds just enough interest, and enhances the text on the rice paper. A coat of Distress Crazing lays down some subtle crackling on both panels, enhanced by fingertip washes of Distress Crayons.

I cut the trio of Wildflower Stems from watercolor paper and gave them washes of Distress Oxides, laying on more vibrant color on the one flower head. Since I wanted that stem to stand out even more, I adhered several of the die cuts together and then popped it up with foam dots. The butterflies were cut from the same Stamperia rice paper panel, adhered to Wendy Vecchi's Clearly For Art Whiteout film and fussy cut. They were heated and shaped while still pliable. Everything is adhered with Distress Collage Medium Matte over a panel I made a while back. I considered it a failed mixed media attempt at the time, but everything has a use eventually. If I remember correctly, it's embossed with a brick embossing folder and colored with Oxides. Grit Paste was pushed through a hand made bricks stencil for even more texture. A Quote Chip smeared with Distress Crayon and a fluffy bow made with several blue seam binding scraps finishes off the tag.

  17. Well my friend, this is a stunning tag you have created and absolutely perfect for the blue theme. That stamperia paper is gorgeous and seems like an awesome way to add the look without doing all the work(and in my case-the final look is way more appealing than anything I could create!) I’ve got those wildflower stems on order and can’t wait to play as this is completely inspiring!!! I love your work, thank you for sharing xx
