Who Do You Think You Are -- A Rare Art Journal Page

Hello friends! I decided to have a little playtime with my newer Oxide Sprays for the latest challenge at A Vintage Journey -- Neutral Zone. The talented and lovely Nikki isour hostess this month, and here's how she describes it:

Time to banish colour! You can create with blacks, whites, greys, beiges, creams and browns but whatever you make, and whatever style, needs to stay in the neutral zone. And remember to create in one of our preferred styles of vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journaling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk.

It's been a couple of years since I've played in my Robert Browning's Poetical Works art journal, and since the previous entries all had butterflies on them, I thought I would somehow include Tim Holtz Geo Butterfly. Poor thing doesn't seem to be too popular around the blogs, so I'm trying to give him some extra air time here at sarascloset. At first he was going to be wings for my Paper Doll, so I removed his antenna. I ended up letting him speak for himself on his own page.

My pages were sealed with clear gesso, and I adhered collage paper with collage medium. Even though this is Tim Holtz Halloween Collage Paper, I thought it looked like the dogwood trees that are blooming in our area now.  I sanded and inked the paper doll with vintage photo ink and adhered. I sealed pages once again with collage medium, leaving areas around the edges untouched. I sprayed with Distress Oxide sprays: Iced Spruce, Vintage Photo, Walnut Stain and Picket Fence Distress Spray Stain. I wiped with paper towel after spritzing to blend the colors. You can see that the places I left free of collage medium became saturated with the spray.

I can almost hear this little girl saying, "Does this doodling make me look chubby?".

I flicked with Picket Fence spray stain and stamped with old Tim Holtz quote stamp in archival ink. I added doodling and outlined the paper doll with gel pen, and then decided she need wings after all. I adhered Geo Springtime butterfly die cut to vellum, trimmed and adhered to the page. I blended the edges randomly with Ground Espresso ink. I love what it did to some of my doodling!

No art rules followed here, judging from my lack of white space, but I did have fun making these pages and learned a little more on how to use my new sprays. I hope you'll stop by A Vintage Journey to check out all the wonderful neutral inspiration created especially for you by my fellow Creative Guides. And then, it's over to you! I hope you'll find some time to play along this month. Happy crafting! Hugs and Blessings! Sara Emily

  1. We are delighted to welcome you to Art Journal Journey, Sara. I hope to see more of your journal pages in the future, too, because you make beautiful and most impressive art. I especially like how you carried your collage paper across both pages. I had to read it twice to believe this was paper, not a stamp, because you did such a great job sanding and matching the papers together. This was fun to read about and I was really impressed. Thanks for sharing it with us at Art Journal Journey. And welcome to AJJ, too!!!

  15. Beautiful pages Sara, collage over text it's a match made in heaven. I love how you have given an overall vintage touch to this, like a book left open where the pages have been exposed to sunlight and discoloured over time. We know there was once white space but time has taken it over. A sweet addition with the Paper doll & Butterfly of which I have yet to use (shame on me!!) A delight as always to see with a warm hug attached at the end. Tracey xx
