This is the one I am entering; I just did the other one while the goodies were out. Second tag at end of post. |
That word band only LOOKS crooked! I think it must have been my angle taking the photo, because I checked it with a level. |
I've pretty much followed all of Tim's instructions, so stop by Tim's blog for all the details on how the master of Distress, color and texture has put his together. I stepped off the path just a teeny bit, making a few adjustments in the background, the colors, and my choice of embellishments, but including all the techniques he used on his tag.
.
Background: Symphony Tissue Tape and a bit of butterfly washi tape from my stash laid down first. My choice of Distress paint in Mowed Lawn, Mustard Seed and Iced Spruce on the first tag and added some Salty Ocean on the second one. I also inked over a honeycomb stencil (TCW) with Evergreen Bough Distress ink.
I make my masks using red Staz On ink so I can see it better when I put it over my stamped image. |
Stamped image: I used Archival ink in Library Green and Cobalt with the butterfly from the Perspective set. Love this image, and I have been using it so much with my spring projects! I was the lucky winner of this stamp set on Tim's blog after CHA--thank you Tim and Mario! I was so excited to see it on this month's tag!
Texture: I chose the Flourish Layering Stencil and Cloisonne High Gloss Crystals--my second time using them; I think they give a nice high enameled look that I've not been able to achieve with any of my other gold embossing powders. The granules tend to migrate as you heat them, like a slow moving lava flow, so the more intricate areas didn't turn out as well as the embossing powders would have. These were given to me by a friend years ago without instructions, so this was purely an experiment. I rather like the look they give!
I tried mixing it up on my second tag here using three different colors of the granules, but was not happy with the lighter color. I laid the stencil back over the embossed tag and using Ranger's Embossing Dabber, I laid down some gold Cloisonne over the lighter areas. Ehhh, not the best results, but I embraced imperfection, and it ended up all good in the end.
This is the second tag. |
Embellishments: For my first tag, I used alcohol ink and a Remnant Rub on an Enameled Tag, fastened it with a Trinket pin to the Crinkle Ribbon which I colored with Distress paint and stain. I love the enameled tags--they remind me of my old sink in my laundry room, and they can be decorated to suit any project. The Alpha Parts (Ransom Note) "2" colored with Distress paint and copper fabric paint--I don't have the Antiqued Bronze DP yet--just ordered it.(UPDATE: My box of Distress Paints just arrived--I am seeing more March tags! Thank you, Linda!). The Idea-ology arrow and Observations Word Band were treated the same. To get the sparkly effect in the letters, I added some Perfect Pearls powder in the recesses while the paint was still wet. I dabbed on a tiny bit of Black Soot and tied the band on with Paper Twine. A gear and a cog painted with Black Soot and two flowers from the Foliage set painted with Distress paint, wiped off here and there and filled in with alcohol ink add some more interest. The flower centers are a Recollections bubble that I cut apart.
I used some numerals colored with Distress paint and Ranger alcohol inks on my second tag. I edged the numbers in Black Soot, so they would show against the background. The word band and the Moments token both were painted with Distress paint and wiped to leave the paint in the recesses. Some copper fabric paint was also added. I tied the word band on with Paper Twine. I added a Chit Chat sticker edged in Vintage Photo and fastened the token with a Swivel Clasp Fastener. I gifted this tag to a friend who was celebrating her 40th birthday this weekend.

Wow Sara! Both tags are gorgeous!! Love that crooked metal sign (just teasing) I can see you measuring and checking it with a level :) the colors are so beautiful and your heat embossing is spectacular! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Samra, you are my first commenter this time! You win a great big hug! You are sweet to find such nice things to say about my tags! Shhh....I didn't REALLY use a level- just a piece of paper. My husband is an architect (turned middle school math teacher in the near future, I hope), and he pulls my chain if things aren't straight! I did have a tiny level around here somewhere, but I'll be darned if I can find it! Have a wonderful evening! Hugs!
DeleteYour tags are so beautiful! I love them.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Nancy! I really appreciate you stopping in to say hi!
Deletewow! This is so springy and a a visual treat, I mean so refreashing to see this...Sara. Love the colors and that gold embossing is fab, a lot of dimension. Great job Sara and big hugs to you. I your second tag is lying idle, send it to me, lol! Love it.
ReplyDeleteHi, Rupa, I'm so happy to see you here, and your comment just put a huge smile on my face! This is a fun technique, and those granules are perfect for the embossing. So happy you like it! I'm afraid my second tag has already been taken away by my "over the hill" friend! Hugs!
DeleteHi Sara, thanks for visiting me earlier and the lovely comments about my tag. That means so much. I have only just started making them and the techniques still make me feel a bit nervous :) I ADORE your tags, they are stunning, I love the yellow streak in the last photo, feels like light is shining across it. Cool. Cx
ReplyDeleteWow, Thank you, Claire! I'm so happy you came to visit! that's what I love about those Distress paints; you just never know what you'll end up with! You can make it the same exact way and the same colors and it will look so different every time. I usually end up making 5 tags for every tag I end up with. I save them all, and they usually end up in some other project. You shouldn't feel nervous...your tag is fantastic! I think Tim likes first-timers--my first Tim tag ever won in Nov. 14. It's all about the creative process! Keep up the great work!
DeleteOh, Sara your tags are STUNNING! I love your amazing embossing! The colors are fabulous! Brilliant, my friend!
