Halloween in January?

Hello crafty friends! I know I'm a little off season, but Halloween is my second favorite holiday, and the current challenge at Frilly and Funkie is Holiday Hues.  Pamellia wants to see our favorite colors for our favorite holidays.  I've already covered Christmas with my favorite grungy browns and greys and blue and silver, so I wanted to give equal time to Halloween.  It really is my "other" favorite holiday, but for much different reasons than Christmas.  Christmas is a very important day to me because it is the day Christ was born, but Halloween is a season of fun and silliness to me. I just opened my brand new Wilted Violet Distress paint and spray, and got to work on this casket. UPDATE: I was inspired by Nicole Wright's Haunted Dwellings, and purchased this color JUST because of her pretty little neighborhood! SECOND UPDATE!: No black light was used to photograph these; this is the natural color of the Wilted Violet; isn't it great!


This started out as a cute little chipboard coffin I got from the dollar store in October.  I bought them out.  I don't go for cute, but I won't let that stop me.  A little gesso, some Distress paint in my favorite Halloween color  and some trim is all it took to transform this from cute to well...I really don't know how to describe this.  It was just plain fun to make.  I hope it fits the vintage theme at Frlly and Funkie! I tried to make it look like it's been around for awhile with the spider droppings on the side (splattered DecoArt Titanium white).

 I dyed the white fluffy trim with Wilted Violet Distress spray and paint, Dylusions  spray, Crushed Grape and Perfect Pearl mist. Isn't it just to die for??? The exterior of the coffin is painted with black gesso and white gesso on the edges and in a few random spots. The white gesso was painted over with Wilted Violet paint.  The interior is painted with white gesso and again, the Wilted Violet paint.  While the paint was wet, I splashed with some alcohol--a technique I learned from my hair stylist. Thank you, Brandon! I really love the way it turns out with the purple. The black trim is from my stash.

A Late Christmas Card

Hello everybody!  I may look like I'm on top of things, making my Christmas cards for next year already, but truth be told this is a card I just made for my sister for THIS year! Yup! I'm late with her Christmas gift! I ordered a gift card  for her favorite ice cream shop, but it somehow got shuffled around with the paperwork on my husband's desk, and it just surfaced.  I didn't want to just give her the gift card by itself, so I made this card to send it in. It's all good though, because my sister and I are never on time with each other's gifts; we believe the spirit of Christmas should be throughout the year (it's our little sisterly tradition), and I already sent her a home made card enclosed with her other gifts.


No new techniques here, but I was inspired by Pamellia's Christmas Polka card with it's peek a boo opening and her beautiful  blue, silver and white color scheme. Further inspiration came from Ingrid with her incredible snowy "postal" card.

The bottom layer was made using Tim Holtz Layering Stencil, Stripes and Perfect Pearls Mist, Pewter. The blue layer is inked with Distress inks and given the old spritz and flick. I fussy cut the stamped trees and popped them up.  The  die cut trees (popped up further), the large snowflake, and the bottom edge of the oval got a snowy treatment using  Distress glitters. The snowflake background stamp is my latest addition to my collection. Love it! I ended up using 3 layers of foam tape, so this baby's thick!



To finish off the card I added a floppy hand dyed bow made using my vintage seam binding.  This doesn't hold it's shape as well as Tim's Crinkle ribbon, but it takes a wicked curl--I wish my hair would hold a curl like that! A bit of bling for the snowflake and a splattering of white acrylic paint for a little flurry.  Have I mentioned how much I LOVE my Tim Holtz Splatter brush????

Anything But Cute Mixed Media Challenge # 9 "Ring Out the Old, Bring in the New"

Happy New Year everyone!  It's time for our first challenge of 2016 at Anything But Cute, and this time  the uber-talented and always sweet Anne is our hostess. Her theme is "Ring Out the Old , Bring in the New".  I used my not so new, but never used before Impression Obsession deer dies to adorn this money wallet I made for my son. I tried making a pun by using the big buck on the inside...get it??? A big buck for the big "bucks".


To celebrate the New Year, we would like you to create a mixed media card or project using something 'new'. Perhaps you got some fabulous new craft item for Christmas or you have something new that you have not used yet - just remember to tell us what the new item is!

I started with Ranger manila card stock and my go-to grunge colors of Distress ink.  I squished some on my craft mat and spritzed with water, and swiped the card through the puddle, drying between layers, until I was happy with the way it looked...pretty much like a dirty craft mat! Next, I blended on some more inks and flicked on some water for a real grungy look.




I did the same on the inside, but kept the colors a little lighter. Next I scored  several times in two places for the folds, added some stenciling using Tim Holtz Snowflakes stencil and Iced Spruce and Evergreen Bough Distress inks and some stamping using Tim Holtz Christmas stamps and Archival ink, Watering Can. Lastly, I flicked on Picket Fence Distress paint. Wishes is Tim Holtz Handwritten Holidays Thinlits, which I heat embossed in gold.

 

 

Back to the front, I added more stamping and again used the Snowflakes stencil, this time with Ranger Sticky embossing powder and Pumice Stone Distress Glitter. I swiped on Rock Candy Crackle paint randomly and along the bottom edge. When dry, I swiped Picket Fence Distress paint on the crackle with my finger to show off the cracks. Again, I splattered on Picket Fence paint. All edges were blended with Ground Expresso and Hickory Smoke Distress inks.





















I accordion folded heavy vellum to make gussets for the sides and glued them in place to keep the bucks from getting away. I added the buck to the inside pocket and the fawn and deer to the front, layering up on a second black card die cut for a shadow. The three deer were embossed with Antique Linen and Tea Stain Distress Powders and inked with Vintage Photo and a bit of paint for the fawn's spots.











I tied it up with a piece of hand died string and added a sparkly snowflake from my stash.  My son loved his gift of money, but he loved the wallet even more. Sorry for the poor photography.  I literally made this Christmas Eve after being up since 4:30 am preparing meals for the homeless at our church, after the evening church service and dinner, and yet more Christmas light peeping (how we celebrate every Christmas Eve), and by the time I finished it was well into the wee hours of Christmas day. Next year I will start earlier!

Merry Christmas In My Grungy Style

 Happy New Year! Holiday Hues is the challenge theme Pamellia chose at Frilly and Funkie this time, and we get to pick our favorite holiday and our favorite colors of the holiday! My project today is not what you would expect at Christmas, but what can I say?...I love a grungy palette for any holiday! And Christmas is my favorite! Well, so is Halloween, but for now, it's Christmas!


It was a busy day on Christmas Eve, and I found myself putting together a few last minute gifts.  One of these is this gift card wallet I made for my husband.  I actually had the gift, but it was too heavy and bulky to wrap, so I tore off part of the label from the gift and put it into this folder and tied it on our tree.  If anyone knows the story of the Christmas mouse, you know he is Santa's helper, and he always ties a gift on the tree with yellow ribbon.  One of our family's traditions is to tie one gift for each member on the tree with yellow ribbon.

This fits right in with Claudia's Make Time challenge at Our Creative Corner; I definitely felt free with my creativity in making this, but I sure did not allow myself "time". However, I did manage to pull some of those awesome colors from her mood board.


Lots of Distress inks in browns, neutrals, and just a little Iced Spruce for the background, front and back of my Ranger manila card. On the front of the card, I swiped silver texture paste through Tim Holtz snowflakes stencil and sprinkled with Ranger silver tinsel embossing powder and heat dried (Of course, I was in a very big hurry!). I sprinkled on Frantage and heated from underneath and wiped on some metallic wax on the snowflakes and around the edges.



On the back I used the stencil with crackle texture paste and when dry, wiped a little metallic wax with my finger on the snowflakes and around the edges.


   


Inside I stamped Tim's Merry Christmas snowflakes in Iced Spruce and stenciled more snowflakes with crackle texture paste. While it was still wet, I sprinkled with Frantage and then heated. More Frantage at the bottom of the card. They look like black blobs in the photo above, but actually are antique gold.



Merry Christmas is a Top Dog die embossed with Ranger silver Tinsel powder. I shaded with Hickory Smoke Distress marker. This is actually quite sparkly in real life.


To prevent the gift's label from falling out,  I made two accordion folds from heavy vellum and glued them in place at each side to form a pocket. I dyed some grey vintage seam binding with Ground Expresso Distress ink and a spritz of Perfect Pearl spray and tied it closed.
