An Odd Mixed Media Card for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog

Hello and welcome! Today starts a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog. The incredibly talented and creative Suzz is our hostess, and she chose the theme, Leap into The Odd. Here's her description of the challenge:

"2020 is a leap  year which means we will have an additional day in February ending on an odd number of days.  The definition of odd is "different from what is usual or expected; strange."    My challenge to you is to create something odd or unusual.   Also you must tell us what is odd or unusual in your project when you share it with us!"

As always, the winner will earn a chance to be a Guest Designer at a future date at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, and everyone who enters and follows the rules will go into the draw for the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique. There are also Top 3 Badges for three additional outstanding entries, chosen by the Design Team. Please see the blog for details.

I'm going to share some closeup photos, and then a few process photos that might help you see what is odd  about my spring card beside the fact I used a Tim Holtz Halloween Creepy eye and some feathers from a Halloween boa to embellish the bird from Tim's Modern Christmas stamp set. The plumage on his head is pretty obvious, but did you spot his tail feathers?

I popped the iris from the Creepy Eye and patted it with Picket Fence paint to take the shine down. It's a little large, but that makes it that much more odd.

I had a portion of a Destinations Thinlits die cut on my worktop, and left it in it's original white card state; perhaps a little odd to have pure white on a vintage card, when everything else is tinted with Antique Linen or another darker color. Even though a globe is in no way related to the overall theme of the card, I think it works like a doily for a place for your eye to rest on this busy card.

I was excited to get my hands on the Modern Christmas stamp set, but sadly, it was after Christmas. I think the bird works quite nicely on a spring card, don't you? He's inked in Vintage Photo and Spiced Marmalade Distress Archival ink and blended with Mermaid Lagoon and Black Soot ink.  Large Funky Floral and Garden Greens Thinlits flowers and foliage make a nice contrast to all the dark and vivid colors. (Perhaps the dark/vivid color scheme could be considered another oddity?)

The branch from Large Funky Floral set may seem a bit odd; typically it points in the opposite direction. After cutting it, I flipped it over and dipped it into Antique Linen Oxide and heat embossed with Eileen Hull Molten Dimension Glistening Glass Embossing Powder.  I don't like shiny, but I do love the texture the powder creates, so I scribbled it with Walnut Stain Distress crayon to bring out the bumps and to hide the glare.

Inspired by Toni's (Artistic Craft Dabbler) wood veneer cover on her journal, I made my background panel from birch bark I found after cleaning up after a good blow a  week or so ago. (I would consider this an odd background.) I used Distress Collage Medium Matte to glue it down and stuck it under a couple heavy books for a day to be sure it was really stuck down, because it was about to take a beating.

I gave it another coat of collage medium over top and after it was dry just to touch, I sprayed with Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide spray and wiped with a paper towel to leave it to just lightly tint the bark. I blended Walnut Stain crayon around the edges and to highlight the texture of the bark layers.

Using a Shifter Mini Stencil (but not shifting) and Mermaid Lagoon Distress paint, I added the dots. Finally, I patted with entire panel with Picket Fence paint using my finger and used some old Remnant Rubs on the background. Nothing out of the ordinary there, just some good messy fun.

I was going to use this panel of Tim Holtz Christmas paper stash which I stenciled with Transparent Matte Texture  paste and Tim's Floral stencil, but that turned out a disaster. I'll probably use that on a future project, if I can figure out how to salvage it. In the meantime, rather than waste all that great texture paste on the reverse side of the stencil, I turned it over onto a scrap to make a monoprint, which didn't turn out much better.

Once the monoprint scrap dried, I sprayed it with Oxide spray and water and moved the color around, blotting with a paper towel as I dried it.  Yay! Salvaged! I love how the color settles in around the dried paste design. I blended with Antique Linen Oxide ink and Rusty Hinge ink when it was completely dry and die cut with Stacked Baroque Thinlits. I think this is a bit of an odd way to make a background, and I love the effect. I'm pretty sure I couldn't make another one if I tried.  I only took the photo to remind me of what colors I used; I'm not exactly sure of the exact process.

My sentiment is cut from this clothing tag I had in my stash. What's so odd about it, there's no one that's a size 7 in our family! My guess it's been stashed for a very long time.

So that's it for my odd spring card! Here's one more look at the completed project. There's a whole bunch more odd inspiration at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, created by my talented teammates, so I hope you'll pop over to check them out!

I hope you've picked up some odd ideas to use and that you'll link up your own vintage or shabby chic project to be in for a chance to win one of the awesome prizes! Don't forget to tell us what's odd, because we likely won't be able to pick it out on our own!  One man's 'odd' is another man's 'normal'. I can't wait to see what you will create!

Hugs and happy crafting!
Sara Emily

Valentine's Day Card Set with Tim Holtz Geo Frames and Crochet 2

Sara Emily Barker https://sarascloset1.blogspot.com/ Tim Holtz Sizzix Geo Frames Crochet 2 Valentine Card Set Tutorial 1

Hello friends! I had some fun making some heart themed cards using Tim Holtz Geo Frames and Crochet 2 Thinlits die sets. These cards are for several different occasions: Valentine's Day , a Valentine's day birthday and a thank you card. Since I used pretty much the same thing on each card, I made them assembly line fashion.

This one is for my sister in law's birthday. For each of the cards, I colored a watercolor panel with Distress Spray Oxides in Antique Linen and Worn Lipstick. I blended each panel with Vintage Photo ink and splashed with water and dried. The edges are blended with Black Soot ink.

I made this Valentine card for my husband's mom and dad--still happy together after all these years!

I used Tim's old Hearts stencil with Opaque Crackle paste and set them aside to dry. I had several Geo Frames hearts already cut from Metallic Kraft Stock in Gold and Rose Gold and one from Tim's old paper stash (below). I had backed one of the Rose Gold hearts with vellum which I splattered with Picket Fence paint. Each of the metallic hearts was colored with Cracked Pistachio paint and Mushroom and Rust alcohol inks.

This one is for my daughter; it's our special phrase to one another, and I'm so happy to see it on Tim's Metallic Quotations. The bit of basket filler under the heart makes it a little quirky for a young lady in her early 20's.

I cut another heart from water color paper I sprayed with Worn Lipstick DOXS. I stamped the center with  School Days stamp in Hickory Smoke Archival ink and spread it and the paper stash heart with Distress Crazing Medium. When dry, I rubbed with Vintage Photo Distress Crayon to accentuate the cracks.

This is a thank you card for my sister -- a little late, but she expects that from me. :)

Now that the crackle paste had dried on the background, I did some stamping in Hickory Smoke Archival with stamps from School Desk, Documented, Entomology and my very first Tim Holtz clear stamp (can't recall the name) sets. The Crochet 2 is cut from Rose Gold card stock and colored with Cracked Pistachio paint and Mushroom and Rust alcohol inks. The sentiment is a Clippings Sticker.

This is for my best friend --she's been with me through thick and thin for over 20 years. Lucky me!

This is the frame portion of the heart cut from Worn Lipstick sprayed card. I cut a piece of recycled greeting card to mount it on and re-inserted the little pieces. Once I gave it a coat of Distress Collage Medium Matte to keep all those pieces in place, I aged it with Vintage Photo crayon and a tiny bit of water on my finger.

Here's a Valentine I made from my husband's brother and his wife.

This heart was cut from thick white card. The pieces stayed in when I removed the die, so I gave it a coat of collage medium on the back to hold the pieces in place. I inked the front with Vintage Photo and Black Soot inks. You can see where some of the collage medium got on the front and resisted the ink (pretend it's a plan). I had some of the rusty Crochet 2 die cut left, so I cut it to fit the heart's center.Another of the Crochet 2 die cuts is colored with Antique Linen DOX spray, mushroom alcohol ink, Vintage Photo crayon and Black Soot ink.

To say I am in love with what the tiniest bit of Mushroom alcohol ink tapped onto the inky card stock Crochet die cut does to age it is a gross understatement! Oh, and the more I use my oxide sprays the more I am in love with them, too!

The crackled hearts started to chip a bit when I smudged them with Vintage Photo crayon, so I tapped each of  them with a bit of collage medium to hold all those great bits in place.

I hope you enjoyed my play day as much as I did! Wishing you all a very Happy Valentine's Day! I might be back if I'm happy with the card I'll squeak in for my husband. Sara Emily

Remember This - Framed Mixed Media Collage for A Vintage Journey

Hello friends! It's my turn to host the newest challenge at A Vintage Journey, and I've picked my theme to be 'Against the Grain'.

Most of us love the look of wood and there are a lot of art/craft products out there that help us achieve beautiful wood grain, including stamps, stencils, embossing folders, paper and mixed media products. We would love to see how you add a touch of wood texture or appearance to your vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journaling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk projects.

The Creative Guides have been creating lots of wood grained inspiration for you, so be sure to check it all out but, before you journey over,  take a look at what I created to inspire your wood working projects.

I'll be sharing my how-to in a couple of weeks, but for now I'll just share some close ups and what I was thinking as this came together in my make-it-up-as-I-go-along-and-pretend-it's-a-plan fashion.

I've been happy and proud to be a Creative Guide at A Vintage Journey, but life has gotten in the way of such things, and after three years it's time to turn in my Creative Guide badge. This being my last project as part of the team, I wanted to make something special to remember my time with this lovely and talented group of girls. This will hang on my Closet wall to remind me of these wonderful years of sharing more than just crafty makes with my teammates--truly I was blessed with friendships and camaraderie.

Of course, there's that Vintage Journey thing.

A couple of world maps to signify our creative journey and the fact that our team comes from all parts of the globe.

I even made sure to get the UK and a London ticket in there, since A Vintage Journey is of UK origin. And this pair of girlfriends was chosen to signal the friendships I've made. The compass serves to give direction to the future.

I chose blues, because I'm a little blue over leaving the team, and rust, well, just because I love rust.

And there's plenty of wood grain to satisfy the challenge.

And a little prompt to always remember...

Now I hope you'll travel on over to A Vintage Journey to check out all the great wood grain inspiration from my fellow Creative Guides. Then it's over to you; I can't wait to see what you create! As always, we'll be selecting a few chosen Pinworthies at the end of the challenge to display on our Vintage Journey Pinterest boards. Hugs! Sara Emily

Love Is All Around Us With Tim Holtz Geo Frames

Welcome friends! It's time for a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog. Super talented Jenny is our hostess, and she calls her challenge Love Is All Around Us. Here's how she describes her theme:

 With Valentines Day approaching it's time to share a little love. Create something vintage or shabby chic featuring hearts. Here's a few ideas to get you started;

Instantly, I was drawn to the lacy bow on the package and the roses from Jenny's beautiful mood board. To get started on my non-traditional Valentine's Day card, I found this wonderful rose themed paper in Tim Holtz Halloween Worn Wallpaper collection. I think it works equally well for Valentine's Day, don't you? I used my sewing machine to stitch it to white card and then mounted on Classic Kraft Stock which I sanded and blended with Vintage Photo Distress ink. This is glued to a white card blank. Finally, I splattered with Picket Fence paint and set it aside to dry.

I cut a Crochet 2 Thinlit from a scrap of card that mopped up Hickory Smoke Oxide some time ago. These dies have no blades on the ends, so you can cut a continuous die cut from any length of paper you might have. I cut this one a little longer, because initially I was going to run it vertically. I just trimmed the ends with my scissors to make it fit horizontally.

I die cut a variety of flowers and greenery from Funky Florals Large (and #2, #3 sets) from papers I had colored with Distress Oxide Sprays. I used Fired Brick (blended with Vintage Photo ink) for the flower centers, Iced Spruce for the twigs and flowers and Peeled Paint and Shabby Shutters combined with Kraft stock for the greenery.

The white paper hearts and silver toned heart charm came from the sweet thank you baggie of goodies Linda includes with every purchase from her shop. I blended the hearts with Antique Linen ink and painted the charm with Distress paints -- Picket Fence and Antique Bronze.

The little red dots on the background and on the flower center are actually waste from one of the Large Funky Florals, and I couldn't resist using them.

I  cut a Geo Frame heart from Rose Gold Metallic Kraft Stock 2 and patted it with a little Picket Fence paint. I backed it with vellum and splattered it with watery Picket Fence paint. I stamped and embossed a scrap of vellum with the Love stamp from my stash to see how it would look on the heart, but ended up cutting it out and adhering it to the background.  Sometimes I just don't trust myself to emboss directly on my background. LOL

I hope you've picked up some ideas to use on your Love themed makes. There's a whole bunch more hand crafted Love over at The Funkie Junkie Boutique blog, prepared by my talented teammates, so hop on over! And then, I hope you'll link up your own vintage or shabby chic project to be in for a chance to win one of the awesome prizes! I can't wait to see what you will create! Happy crafting! Sara Emily
