Mixed Media Birthday Card-Scrapy Land Challenge #69 Anything Goes

Hello crafty friends and visitors! It's time for our latest challenge at Scrapy Land, and this time it's 'Anything Goes', my favorite! Today I made a birthday card for my lovely daughter who is turning 19! Where does the time go?

To create my background I chose a summer themed paper by Pion and  die cut with Sizzix Mixed Media #2 Thinlits on the reverse side so I could use the cut in the bottom left corner.  I colored the mixed media paper underneath with DOX Peeled Paint, Cracked Pistachio and Walnut Stain. Aren't those colors just yummy peeking through?

The hydrangeas in my garden are starting to fade, so I colored my Sizzix Small Tattered Florals accordingly. I used DOX Wilted Violet and Faded Jeans, twisted them up into the sweetest tiny flowers and gave them a single Art Stone each, colored with Wilted Violet Distress stain. I tucked a few tissue paper single layered flowers behind and added some mini art stones here and there just for fun. The bits of foliage are Tattered Lace Ornate Leaves.

The treble clef ( Poppystamps Meloy Music Die) echos the music in the background and is dipped in Peeled Paint DOX. This particular die is no longer available but you can see Scrapy Land's huge selection of music themed dies here.

The Frantic Stamper Dragonfly Pair is also colored with DOX.  Spellbinders Opulent Ovals is colored with mop up oxide color from my craft mat and Penny Black Splendid Wishes is colored with DOX Faded Jeans without water. I love how rich the color is. An easy way to get pure Oxide color on these delicate cuts is to turn them over onto the ink pad and press them into the color with the blending tool. It gets the color not only on the top but around the thin edges as well, and you don't risk wrinkling your die cut. I also like to dip mine into a watery puddle of color, but the Oxides will fade somewhat with the addition of water.

That's all for me today! Now it's your turn! Please head over to Scrapy Land to see all the amazing inspiration from my talented team mates! I hope you'll join our 'Anything Goes' challenge this time to be in the running for one of two $10 gift vouchers (one random winner and one chosen by the team) to Scrapy Land or to be Chosen as one of our Top Picks. We welcome all styles of crafting from CAS to messy mixed media, and your project doesn't have to be a card. Just remember to use at least one brand of die that Scrapy Land sells in the shop to be eligible for the prizes!

Thank you for visiting today and for leaving your lovely comments! I read and appreciate each and every one!
Hugs and Blessings!

  21. What a stunning birthday card Sara! I love the colour palette, that green is so vibrant and fresh, and the blues and purples are such wonderful summery colours! Stunning work with the die cut out showing your amazing background underneath! Your flowers are brilliant, the background paper is beautiful and I adore the addition of the music notes! Your daughter will treasure this forever!! (she's 19 already, wow!)

We are having unseasonably mild weather this year, with only a hot humid day now and again. We have had more rain this year than in the last decade. The rivers are overflowing and the walkways are flooded, but I dare complain after the severe drought we had last year. With all the lush greenery and foliage, it's hard not to see the bright side! I'm still working on my patio, slowly adding a flower and a plant here and there, but I get to enjoy it every day and I'm thankful for that. I think of you often my friend and hope you are well. Sending hugs from way up north. :)

  23. Hi, Sara - I'm back to answer the question you left on my blog (need to get your email address - I don't have it for some reason, and your blogging profile does not share it). To answer your question about Caladium bulbs - I think it depends where you live and which types you own, as to whether they should be dug up. I am in central Florida near the about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico (straddling garden Zones 9-10). I do not dig my caladiums up. We purchase from Caladium World. I've tried a few other places, but the quality and size are not as good as CW. Mine are planted 4-6 inches deep. Our varieties are sun lovers, but there are also shade lovers. Because of where we live, they generally do better in pots - but the caladiums around the water feature are planted directly in the ground and have been growing for 15 years. Last year, I replenished a few of the white ones with Little Miss Muffet variety because of a problem we caused. The bigger the leaves (Red Flash), the more glorious the color, but winds and drought can cause them to break at the stem, and they are usually gone by mid-August. The smaller sun-loving varieties last until the end of September, and sometimes, even longer depending on how long Summer stays around heat-wise.

On to something even more personal - I wish I lived near you, because I would love to learn how to do the incredible mixed media projects that come from your talented fingers. You would make a fab teacher. The combinations of products and resulting artwork always ALWAYS wow me!

Have a great day, Sara, and thank you for your kind comment on my blog. xx
