A Little Frilly, A Little Funkie With Tim Holtz Swirls 3D Embossing

I just cracked open my new Tim Holtz Swirls 3D Embossing Folder and had a little play with it. I tried it out on a variety of papers, and ended up completing two cards totally different from each other. Here's my first which I would say is a little on the funkie side. You might remember The Funkie Junkie Boutique challenge blog used to be called Frilly and Funkie, and we had a frilly team and a funkie team. I was a part of the funkie side, but I always like to get a little frilly from time to time.

I'll just share some close ups today, as I got immersed in the making and forgot to take step by step photos. It should be easy enough to share what I did in the text.

First, I made this deeply embossed background using Tim Holtz Metallic Jewels Kraft Stock . I placed a panel cut to size in the embossing folder with the color side down and spritzed it with water, then ran it through my die cut machine 3 times. I ran my Rustic Wilderness Distress ink pad directly over the raised panel and dried it. Next, I sanded the panel and blended with Wild Honey ink and dried. I love how the areas that are sanded back to the kraft add for even more dimension as the inks soaks in. In my next step, I painted the panel very lightly with my finger and Wild Honey Distress paint. I mostly dried the paint with my heat tool, and watched it pull away from the raised edges revealing the green metallic paper. Very cool and unexpected! Lastly, I blended with Vintage Photo ink.

I die cut an old stamped panel and brown card I had in my stash using an older Tim Holtz Stitched Ovals. I peeled away the outer edge of the stamped oval and adhered it over the brown one. The Tim Holtz Scribbly Butterflies were cut from more brown card and also watercolor paper. After removing the antennae, I dipped the white one into a puddle of watery Wild Honey ink, dried, and layered it over the brown butterfly die cut.

The Wildflower Stems #3 die cut  (now available for March restock pre-order in the shop!) is cut from scraps of water color paper colored with Mustard Seed ink and more of the green Metallic stock and layered. The vintage button is from my stash, and I adhered a green gemstone in it's center (included in Linda's thank you gift from my last order from the shop) using Distress Collage Medium Matte. The ribbon is from my stash and the sentiment is a Ideaology Metallic Quotations sticker matted on a scrap.

The panel was adhered to trimmed white card colored with Wild Honey ink over an old Tim Holtz paper stash inked with Ground Espresso ink, and that, to a card blank, also blended with Ground Espresso. I assembled everything after wadding up some gold thread under the butterfly and making a floppy bow with what was left of my ribbon .

And here is my CAS, frilly version. Slim line cards are making a resurgence, so I thought I would try making one.

I started with white card cut to size. I embossed one end, following suggested protocol, then flipped the card around and stuck just the un-embossed end into the folder before running it through my die cut machine. You can hardly see the line, but it's shown in  the close up below; the die cuts hide it nicely.

For my focal floral arrangement, I used these delicate little die cuts from Sizzix Floral Layers #2 by Jen Long. The foliage from this versatile set made it's debut on my Vignette Tray I made for the last Saturday Showcase. I was a little worried about putting together those tiny flowers at first, because of my poor eyesight, but it's really rather simple with the embossed lines on the die cuts to guide you. I find it's easier to cut the little extra bits and leave them in the card you cut them from, poking each one out as you need it. 

I simply sprayed two pieces of water color paper with water, then Oxide sprays: one Spun Sugar and one Kitsch Flamingo and dried them. Then I cut a set of the roses and the little bits out of each prepared card. I cut the background long stem and the foliage from plain water color paper and used a water brush to color them with green inks. To get a bit more color dimension, I used Worn Lipstick ink and a water brush to add deeper tones to the pink flowers after they were assembled.  You might notice I left part of the larger roses free to give a little extra dimension. I'm looking forward to making some of these flowers using flower shaping tools, but for now I wanted my card to be simple and flat for ease in mailing.

I inked a Crochet die cut with Black Soot Distress and Archival inks. The butterfly was in my stash from a LONG time ago. Sadly, I don't think I have that stamp any longer. Sniff, sniff. I had stamped and heat embossed on cheap purple card stock and fussy cut. I believe I used a Q-tip with bleach on it to remove the color from parts of the wing and brushed it with Perfect Pearls powder. I just added a smudge of Prima Patina Green Matte Wax on making this card to update him a bit.

 

For my sentiment, I cut Joy from black card and Tim Holtz Alphanumeric Shadow Upper dies using just the inside portion of the letters, saving the outer parts for another day. I added a portion of a Halloween sticker  ("You're my favorite monster") to complete the sentiment. The black half pearls were toned down with Prima White Matte Wax. I thinly matted on black card then mounted on a white card blank and assembled.

I was able to show off the simmer of the butterfly and subtle dimension of this simple card in this photo.

Best Day Ever

Welcome! I hope you had a wonderful Valentine's Day! Today it's my turn to host the newest challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique challenge blog, and I've named it "Mostly Neutral'.

There's really not a lot to this card, so I don't have a ton of closeups to share or any process shots, but I did take a few extra full on shots. I really love the simplicity of a neutral palette, but it's hard not to sneak in a tiny bit of color. In absence of a lot of color on my card, I've made up for it in textures and patterns, wouldn't you agree?

I started with (--you guessed it!) a background from my stash. It was mainly neutral with what I believe to be a little Iced Spruce mixed in. I really consider Iced Spruce to be an almost-neutral with tendencies toward blue (in my opinion). You might see shades of red and green on the background if you squint your eyes, but that's the magic of Distress at work. The inks seem to take on a life of their own as they blend with those they are next to. The Scribbly Butterfly was already hovering on my desk, so I took a cue from the blueish tint on it and added Speckled Egg to my background and the two circle die cuts I found in my stash. The circles were also blended with Antique Linen, and both the butterfly and circles edged with  Brushed Corduroy. Just the smaller circle is edged with Black Soot.

I adhered the Flowery die cut to the background, wrapped it with a length of dyed seam binding ribbon and layered that panel on a sanded Classic Kraft Stock panel and lastly, to a card blank. The circles are adhered with layers of corrugated card between  each of them and also the background. The butterfly is layered over another I traced on black card with the metal die as my template and fussy cut. The butterfly is adhered to the circle at the body only.

I layered a Metallic Quotations sticker to a scrap of sanded classic kraft stock. With that, my card is complete. So easy!

To tie in with the theme, I decided to use the new Sizzix Foliage Wrap die by Olivia Rose. This set comes with the die to make the wrap that you see on this card as well as an additional 6 sweet coordinating flower and foliage dies. I'll show off  the complete set and give you all the details on how I made this card and others this coming Saturday for our Saturday Showcase feature. 

For today, I'll share some close ups and a few details...

I used one of the pretty Scribbly Butterflies die cuts to hold the 'flaps' of the Foliage die cut in place over a top fold card. I adhered the butterfly just at his body using Distress Collage Medium Matte, so the wings are free. In the photo below, you catch a glimpse at the top fold card after the flaps are removed.

Using my new Speckled Egg Embossing Glaze I was able to stiffen and shape the flaps a bit, so I can tuck them under the butterfly wings while adding a bit of dimension. Look at that gorgeous detail on this die cut!

 And after un-tucking them, this is what you see...

One of Linda's resin roses from the shop adhered with collage medium adds some interest to this simple card.

Today is Ballpoint Pen day! The challenge is to thoughtfully use a ballpoint pen on your project.  You can doodle, journal, sketch or trace an outline using any color ballpoint pen on your art.  Create a vintage or shabby chic project with some form of ink from a ballpoint pen and if it isn't obvious how it was used make sure to tell us in your post!

I tried many different ways to use my ball point pens, and had so much fun with Suzz's challenge. But in the end, I decided on a penned background panel for my project. It seems I'm in a butterfly rut right now, although I've see very few in my garden (odd!). When I started, I visualized something a bit more bright and sun-shiney, but it just didn't work out that way. Perhaps it was the pensive mood I was in.

Let's get started. My first matter of business was to go through my pens to find one that didn't work.  You can see by my scribbling it required quite a bit of trials before coming up with one.

First I'll share some close ups, then I'll share a bit of the making.

I did some Field Notes stamping in Archival ink on the background at the top and bottom. I wish my penmanship was that graceful and elegant and my lettering that precise.

So where did I use a ball point pen? I removed the spring from the pen, pulled it apart a bit and used it for my butterfly's body. Before dismantling it, I also used my non working pen in another way, but I can't give all the details yet. Since Suzz directs that we tell how we used our pens, I'll give you a hint: I traced a design onto my background. I'll share all the details on how I made my background and Decor Frame that backs the butterfly in my June 20 Saturday Showcase.

I've finished the back with some old Tim Holtz paper stash.

Here's a bit on how I altered the frame and quote chip, and made the butterfly:

I chose a Vignette Frame and painted it with my finger and Distress Weathered Wood paint. You can see I didn't do a thorough job, and this is intentional. ;)

Next I dribbled on some Mushroom Alcohol ink  and spritzed it with water to disperse the ink into the cracks. I used my heat tool to chase around the thinned color and dry.

Last, I scribbled with Distress crayon and blended with a dampened finger.

Now I move onto the Scribbly Butterfly cut from Rose Gold Metallic Kraft Stock, and painted with a bit of Picket Fence paint and more of the Mushroom Alcohol ink, just around the wing tips (not pictured). I want my butterfly to shine. The spring is adhered with Distress Collage Medium Matte.

I altered one of the old Quote Chips (I've linked to the newer ones below) with Embossing Glaze and crayon. Swipe the chip with Embossing Dabber, sprinkle with the glaze, tap off excess, and heat to melt. When it's cool, scribble and blend with crayon.

Beautiful Moments Mixed Media Panel for The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog

Hello and welcome! It's time for a new challenge at The Funkie Junkie Boutique Blog, and Cec is hosting. She calls the challenge, 'Aquamarine', and here's what she says about it:

 "Aquamarine, the birthstone of March, has a rich color and has long been a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its mesmerizing color ranges from pale to deep blue and are reminiscent of the sea."  The challenge is to create a shabby chic or vintage project using the colour aquamarine in any of its shades along with one other colour (it could be white or brown or whatever you wish).  The definition has lots of other prompts you could also use in your creation but the colour requirement is the main focus.

This was really a fun challenge, and I knew right away I wanted to make an ombre background and to use Tim Holtz Geo Frames die cuts. I don't have much in the way of step out photos, but I can give you some details and show you lots of photos of how I made this tag.

I included the shot below (even though it's a little washed out from the bright daylight), because it shows off  that gorgeous prism.

I started with the Organic die and cut it from water color paper. I adhered the die cut to a water color panel with Collage medium and swiped on some crackle paste around the edges with my finger. Once the cracks started forming, I gave it another coat of collage medium. I allowed that to dry to touch and sprayed with Distress Oxide Sprays, starting with the lightest and working to the darkest. These are the colors I used: Cracked Pistachio, Salty Ocean, Mermaid Lagoon and Blueprint Sketch. I spritzed with water and and allowed the colors to blend, coaxing some of the color here and there while I dried with my heat tool.

 I adhered the colored panel to a Baseboard with Collage Medium and sanded the edges when dry. I blended Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain crayon around the edges and splattered some watery ink with a limp paintbrush. Inspired by the definition of aquamarine being a symbol of hope, I chose the word from one of the phrases included in Tim's new Tiny Text stamp set. I stamped it in Vintage Photo and Ground Espresso archival inks first and second generation on a scrap.

Inspired by the photo, I colored four tiny 'gems' and a plastic prism from my stash with alcohol inks: Lettuce, Citrus, Sailboat and Mermaid.

For my focal point, I cut the Scribbly Butterly from water color paper colored with Tumbled Glass Distress Oxide and heat embossed with Glistening Glass powder. I layered this over a Tattered Butterfly die cut colored with brown Distress inks,  sandwiching a perfectly coordinating bow made from the ribbon Linda's Mom dies and wraps up our little thank you goodie bags with. If you shop at The Funkie Junkie Boutique, you already know that Linda includes a wonderful little gift bag in each of her orders, filled with crafty goodies and her Mom hand dies all those seam binding ribbons!

The butterfly is resting atop  a trio of Geo Frames cut from Metallic Kraft Stock. I transformed silver card into a rusty brown with alcohol inks: Rust and Teakwood.

The quote is another from the Tiny Text set; this time I used all of the quote. I used some blue sequins and some shell sequins from my stash, again taking inspiration from the definition of aquamarine, and including something from the sea.

The Field Notes stamps got their first inking with Vintage Photo Archival on a scrap, and I fussy cut the labels tucked in around the frame.

Well, that finishes up another project! Here's one last look at my take on Aquamarine.
