Summer Time Mixed Media Canvas

It's time for those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.  Whether you vacation at the beach, in the mountains, or enjoy a relaxing "Staycation" in your own back yard, your challenge is to create a vintage or shabby chic project that shows what you love best about summer.  Use summer colors in your project, and be sure to tell us in your post what you love about summer, and how you've represented that in your project.

To me, summer time means life is simpler, skies are bluer and butterflies fly carelessly throughout the garden. I love picnics out under the sunny skies in the shade of the trees with a warm soft breeze blowing. One can dream, right? Even though the days may be hazy they have been far from lazy this summer! And sadly, it's hot, sticky and pouring rain as I write this post! But I can craft my  perfect summer day.

For my background panel, I was going for the look of the white washed weathered wood look of a shabby picnic table. I started with a panel cut from a cardboard box and gave it a coat of gesso. Next I inked up Tim's Pine stamp with Versamark and heat embossed with Tea Stain Distress powder. I toned it down a bit with sponged on chalky paint and edged  with Walnut Stain, Hickory Smoke and Vintage Photo Distress Crayons.

The blue sky panel is also waste cardboard. To add texture, I swiped texture paste through Tim's Dot Fade stencil and Distress Grit paste through the negative spaces left from some die cuts Autumn gave me (Scroll by Tim Holtz). I'm hoping to get my hands on this die when it's back in stock at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.  I added some glass bead gel randomly and then gave it all a coat of gesso. I colored with Gelatos in blues and green and Twisted Citron Distress Crayon. I highlighted with gesso and went over that with Dylusions Lemon Zest ink in a water brush. I edged with Chipped Sapphire crayon.

My butterfly was cut once from crinoline and a second time from an old fabric scrap I had in my stash using Tim's Layered Butterfly die. The crinoline butterfly was sprayed with Dylusions spray and shaped while drying with my heat gun. I colored the fabric butterfly with Distress Oxides by swiping  the inks on the raised portion of the enclosed embossing folder, spritzing with water, transferring the color as it was being embossed.  This left a pretty pattern on the butterfly, but unfortunately was lost  when I brushed on the sculpture medium.

I've been wanting to get my hands on some Prima Sculpture medium, and was I ever excited to see Linda carries it in the shop! I shaped my butterfly as I was drying it with my heat gun; perhaps it works best if you can drape it over something and allow it to dry. I was just too impatient.  I layered the shaped and crinoline butterflies on a doily from my stash. The good thing about crinoline is you can shape it once it's wet while applying heat or shape and allow it to dry without using the sculpture medium.

The butterfly body is a brass toned key that Linda included in my Design Team Welcome goodie bag. I gave it a coat of thick sloppy gesso and dripped it with watery DOX. I went back and blended it with Vintage Photo Distress ink to give it definition from the wings.

The ivory jute mesh ribbon was also in my welcome package, and I colored it with watered down Dylusions spray. I stamped some Wendy Vecchi flowers in Archival Sepia ink on card colored with leftover DOX  and fussy cut them. The sentiment is a Tim Holtz Quote Chip.
