Tim Holtz Mixed Media Panel With Altered Embellishment Tips For Frilly and Funkie

Welcome! Over at  Frilly and Funkie challenge blog we are showing off our embellishments! Super talented Jenny is our hostess and her theme is 'Embellishments, Trinkets and Trims'. She says...

Linda sells a huge array of beautiful embellishments, trinkets and trims in her store, from metal filigree pieces and charms to buttons, laces and ribbons. They can be the important focal point on a project or the final finishing touches that complete it. However you wish to use them lets see those embellishments, trinkets and trims in action on your vintage or shabby chic entries.

As always, the Design Team will choose their top four picks, and the winner will be invited to join us in a Guest DT spot at Frilly and Funkie. The next three will receive Top 3 badges to display on their blogs. Everyone who enters and follows the rules will be entered into the draw to have the chance to win a $25 spending spree at The Funkie Junkie Boutique.

My panel was inspired by one of the butterflies lying on my desk that I made for this Saturday Showcase Tutorial. I knew this panel had to be super grungy, and I had to look no further than my rust stained garage floor for the  rusty colors I used on the Ideaology Collage Frame.

I choose a selection of metal Tim Holtz embellishments and a silver toned metal butterfly from The Funkie Junkie Boutique and alter them to make them look old, rusty and corroded. I removed the wings from the butterfly, and will save them for another project. The Ideaology steampunk flowers have been in my stash for years, but everything else is currently available in Linda's shop and linked below. I love Tim's new Hardware Heads! No prongs to bend over or remove, and you get so many different heads to choose from in the package.

I use a length of authentic grimy wood folding rule to provide a guide for altering Tim's Ideaology Ruler Pieces. I smeared the ink directly from the pad onto the ruler piece and added crayon smudges with my fingers.

The silver metallic ribbon is no longer available at The Funkie Junkie Boutique, but here's a link to a substitute ribbon. I colored mine with Copper Mixative,  Antiqued Bronze paint and Twisted Citron Oxide spray and later added a dab or two of Black Soot paint after assembling. Initially, my plan was to thread this through the Quote Band, so I left that part uncolored.

I stamp and heat emboss some images from The Professor and Inventor 1 using Pumice Stone ink and Fractured Ice embossing powder. I didn't like the shine, so I sanded to remove it. Although not visible in the photos, the embossing texture remains.

I smear Grit paste randomly and  add some of my first Tim Holtz tissue tapes from years ago. I color the frame with Distress Oxide Sprays--Antique Linen, Pumice Stone and Iced Spruce with splashes of Twisted Citron. I blend Pumice Stone Distress ink through a Tim Holtz Mini Stencil for subtle shading and add color with Distress Stain and crayon to the dried Grit Paste to resemble crusty rust. The entire frame is edged in Black Soot ink.

I choose an Oxide Spray mop up panel from my stash to back my butterfly and add stamping to it using two old Tim Holtz images from School Desk and Little Labels sets and Oxide inks. After I was done, I adhered a panel of black card to the reverse of the frame (not pictured), and ended up with some wrinkling on the stamped panel. I used those wrinkles to my advantage when placing the butterfly. (pictured below) #pretenditsaplan

I carefully disassemble the butterfly, add Twisted Citron Oxide Spray to both sets of wings. I heat emboss the Geo Springtime butterfly die cut with about 4 layers of Eclipse Seth Apter Baked Velvet powder. Love that matte finish! I cut the antenna off and cut the remaining portion in half. I heat the wings one more time and shape them before adhering between the two metallic butterflies, giving even more dimension. The butterfly body embellishment makes my fantasy butterfly seem more believable. I use the Tiny Attacher to secure the ribbon ends and everything is adhered with Distress Collage Medium Matte.

Here are some additional photos and closeups.

That's it for me! There's plenty more creative ideas on how to use your embellishments, trinkets and trims over at the Frilly and Funkie Challenge blog, where my talented teammates have prepared some amazing inspiration for you! I hope you'll link up your project to our Embellishments, Trinkets and Trims challenge--I can't wait to see what you will create! Hugs and blessings! Sara Emily

  18. A really beautiful piece, Sara Emily - there's somehow a touch of melancholy about it for me, something to do with the nostalgic vintage colour palette and the distressing, I think. Great altering of all your metal elements - makes them so individual and cool.
