Beautiful-Splattering For Fun at Emerald Creek Dares

Hello friends and visitors! It's time for a new Dare at Emerald Creek Dares, and this time we are daring you to 'Splatter For Fun'. Just add splatter to your project this month, be it paint, sparkle, embossing powder, whatever...! My talented teamies have lots of splattered inspiration for you, so be sure to pop over to have a look.  Today, I have a wall hanging for you with lots of splattering effects and sparkle, too!

I started with a piece of corrugated cardboard, gave it a wash of gesso, sprinkled on Emerald Creek Ultra Puff White embossing powder and heated to melt. I splattered with watered down Chipped Sapphire Distress paint, a mixture of Chipped Sapphire and Blueprint Sketch Distress inks, and Wilted Violet Distress ink. I blended random areas with Blueprint Sketch and Wilted Violet and splattered with water. After letting it sit for a minute, I patted with a clean paper  towel to remove some of the color.

The purple panel is a piece of water color paper I used to mop up paints/inks sometime in the past. I'm not sure what colors I used, but I'd be willing to guess Stormy Sky, Chipped Sapphire and Wilted Violet and maybe even Hickory Smoke. This paper was perfect, because it already had the little droplets from picking up the last of the color on the mat. I swiped some of the same inks I used on the cardboard on my mat and spritzed lightly with water. I laid the paper in the ink face down to pick up the little droplets of color for more splattering. Additionally, I splattered on the same paint and inks as I used on the corrugate backing and some watered down white acrylic paint. Again, I blended Blueprint Sketch and Wilted violet in random areas and splattered with water, letting it sit, and patting it with the towel to make those lighter splatters you see here.

I mixed water with clear embossing ink and splattered that on the background. I sprinkled on Emerald Creek Fractured Ice embossing powder, shook off the excess, and heated 'til bubbly. It's hard to capture just how pretty this is on the camera, but in real life, it looks like little ice crystals that pick up the color around them. So pretty!

For the focal point, I embossed a Tim Holtz Ornate Frame cut from chipboard. I slathered on a sloppy layer of thick gesso and sprinkled with Ultra Puff White embossing powder, and heated to melt. I love the subtle matte texture this powder creates.

The Tim Holtz  Detailed Butterfly was cut from water color paper I had blended with Wilted Violet ink, spritzed with water, and heat embossed with a splatter stamp (maker unknown) and Emerald Creek's Onyx Frost. I cut a second butterfly from black paper, cut it in half and embossed the edges with Onyx Frost. I layered them to create a "shadow" and topped with an Emerald Creek Heart Brad I enameled (3 layers) with Ranger Emboss It Dabber and Emerald Creek Candy Red embossing powder.

The Tim Holtz Wildflowers outside the frame were splattered very lightly with diluted white acrylic paint and tipped in Onyx Frost embossing powder for yet some more splatter and sparkle.

I love to put little details on my projects and here you can see some bits of black lace I've tucked between the layers and some threads I've added to lead your eye around the canvas.

"Beautiful" is a gift from my talented friend, Autumn (SewPaperPaint) and it's extra sparkly with Onyx Frost embossing. Oh, how I wish you could see this in person--it sparkles like the sun on dew drops! Underneath you can see some more droplets of the Fractured Ice.

I hope my wall hanging gives you a little inspiration to put some splatter on your art this month and join in the fun at Emerald Creek Dares. You have an entire month to enter, and there's a generous gift certificate to Emerald Creek Craft Supplies for the winner!

  1. Gorgeous piece Sara! I really adore your colours here, the purples and blues work so well together and you have blended them beautifully into one amazing background. The black flowers and the white frame make such lovely accent pieces and the high contrast works wonderfully against the colourful backdrop! The corrugated cardboard background is amazing!! Love the added texture and interest. I think my favourite bit is your sweet butterfly with the red heart in the middle, such an amazing focal piece and boy does that red ever pop!! I hope you had a wonderful couple of weeks while I was away, sending big hugs to you and wishes for a lovely week and weekend!

  5. We were thinking about each other at the same time Sara - I just saw a message from you!!! Thank you sweet girl. This is a lovely card.... and your splatters are done to enhance it's beauty perfectly too. I always enjoy anything with corrugated cardboard so you capture me right off the bat. What delights me the most is the black wildflowers and the black layered butterfly. To me... the black 'silhouette' enhancements takes your card from just being lovely to being elegantly intriguing! One of my favorites Sara. Xj.
